Clear references help preserve the details that make a cat recognizable
For a custom cat sculpture, the most useful photo set shows the face, body shape, coat pattern, and a familiar posture. You do not need a professional photo shoot. Several ordinary, unfiltered photos from different angles usually give a clearer reference than one heavily edited image.
The core photo set
- A clear front or three-quarter face photo for the eyes, muzzle, nose, and ear shape.
- A side view to show the profile and the relationship between the ears, forehead, and muzzle.
- A full-body photo to show the back, chest, paws, tail, and natural proportions.
- One or two photos in the posture you want to preserve, such as sitting, stretching, or lying down.
If the cat has a distinctive marking, include a close-up and a wider photo showing where it sits on the body. The existing pet sculpture photo guide gives a general reference checklist.
Use natural light when possible
Window light or open shade makes coat colors and patterns easier to compare. Avoid strong color filters, extreme portrait blur, and photos where the face is hidden in shadow. If every available photo has difficult lighting, send the originals anyway and note which colors are important to you.
Show the pose without forcing it
A familiar pose often carries more identity than a staged pose. A relaxed sitting photo, a curled sleeping photo, or a standing photo can each be useful. Include enough of the body for the posture to be understood. Cropped headshots help with facial details, but they should sit alongside full-body references.
Include the small details selectively
Close-ups can help with eye color, whisker pattern, paws, claws, collar, or a unique patch of fur. They do not need to be perfect. Add a short note naming the details that must be preserved so the reference set has a clear priority.

Before you order
